How Foot Arches Impact Your Knee Joint Health

How Your Foot Arches Affect Your Knee Pain
Many people are surprised to learn that knee pain often starts much lower in the body — in the feet. The way your foot arches are shaped and how they function can directly influence how your knees feel every day.

What Are Foot Arches?
The foot arch is the curved shape at the bottom of your foot. It works like a natural shock absorber. When you walk, run, or stand, your arches help distribute your body weight smoothly so your joints don’t take too much pressure.

Foot Arches

There are three common types of arches:

Normal arch – balanced weight distribution
Flat feet (low arch) – arch collapses more
High arch – arch is raised too much

How Do Arches Affect the Knees?
Your knees depend on your feet for correct alignment. If your arches are not working properly, the knee joint is forced into an unnatural position.

Flat feet make the foot roll inward. This twists the knee slightly, adding stress to the inner side of the knee.
High arches do the opposite — the foot rolls outward, putting extra load on the outer part of the knee.
Both conditions disturb the body’s natural alignment and over time can lead to knee pain, stiffness, or early wear-and-tear.

Signs Your Foot Arches May Be Causing Knee Pain
Pain increases after long standing or walking
Shoes wear out more on one side
Knees feel “pulled in” or “pushed out”
