Understanding Cervical Rib and Its Clinical Impact

A cervical rib is an extra rib that arises from the seventh cervical vertebra in the neck. It is a congenital anatomical variation present at birth and occurs in a small percentage of the population.

In many cases, it is small and causes no symptoms, and is discovered incidentally on imaging. However, when the rib is larger or positioned in a way that compresses nearby nerves or blood vessels, it can lead to clinical problems.

Symptoms typically develop due to pressure on structures passing from the neck to the arm. Individuals may experience neck and shoulder pain, numbness or tingling in the arm and fingers, weakness of the hand, or even changes in circulation such as coldness or discoloration of the limb. Symptoms may worsen with poor posture or prolonged overhead activity.

Diagnosis is usually made with X-ray or other imaging studies. Treatment depends on severity. Many patients improve with conservative management such as physiotherapy, postural correction, activity and/or ergonomic modification.

Medical Yoga Therapy can be beneficial when practiced carefully under supervision, as it promotes improved posture, gentle strengthening, and relaxation. However, forceful overhead poses or deep neck stretches may aggravate symptoms. Modified, alignment-focused practice is generally recommended.

In more severe cases involving significant nerve or vascular compression, surgical removal of the rib may be considered.
