A Medical Yoga Approach to Frozen Shoulder Recovery

Frozen shoulder is a painful and restrictive condition affecting the shoulder joint. Medically, it is known as Adhesive Capsulitis. It occurs when the joint capsule surrounding the glenohumeral joint (shoulder joint) becomes inflamed, thickened, and tight, leading to progressive stiffness and limited movement. The condition typically develops in three stages: the freezing stage (increasing pain and stiffness), the frozen stage (marked stiffness with reduced pain), and the thawing stage (gradual recovery of movement). It most commonly affects adults between 40 and 60 years of age and is more frequent in individuals with diabetes or after prolonged shoulder immobilization.
Although the primary problem lies in the joint capsule, several important muscles are involved.
The rotator cuff muscles—supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis are affected the most. They play a key role in stabilizing and rotating the shoulder. In frozen shoulder, these muscles often become tight or weak due to restricted use. The deltoid, responsible for lifting the arm, may also weaken. Additionally, scapular stabilizers such as the trapezius, rhomboids, and serratus anterior often become overactive as the body compensates for reduced shoulder joint motion.

The most restricted movements are external rotation (often the earliest and most limited), abduction (lifting the arm sideways), flexion (raising the arm forward), and internal rotation (reaching behind the back). As true shoulder movement decreases, patients frequently compensate by moving the shoulder blade or trunk, which may lead to neck and upper back discomfort. Treatment focuses on pain relief and restoring mobility. Medical yoga offers a structured and gentle approach to rehabilitation. Tailored movements, supported stretches, breathing techniques, and posture correction help reduce muscle guarding, improve circulation, and gradually restore functional range of motion.
When practiced consistently under professional guidance, medical yoga can effectively complement conventional treatment and support holistic recovery.
