Bowing of Legs (Genu Varus) :

Bowing of the legs is a common knee alignment condition medically known as genu varum, or varus deformity. In this condition, the legs curve outward at the knees, giving a bow-shaped appearance. It occurs when the tibia (shin bone) turns inward instead of aligning properly with the femur (thigh bone), causing the knees to move away from the body’s midline.
The alignment between the femur and tibia is called tibiofemoral alignment. Ideally, this alignment forms a straight 180-degree angle. When the angle deviates, even slightly, it can go unnoticed for years before symptoms appear.
The most visible symptom of varus knee is bowlegged posture. Children often show no pain, but adults may experience discomfort or pain on the inner side of the knee. Over time, untreated varus deformity can lead to uneven stress on the knee joint, abnormal cartilage wear, and eventually osteoarthritis, especially during walking or prolonged standing.
Several factors contribute to the development of varus deformity. In adults, osteoarthritis can both, cause and result from varus alignment, creating a vicious cycle of joint damage. Other contributing factors include faulty walking gait (such as outward foot rotation), prolonged excessive knee flexion, and weak inner thigh (adductor) muscles.
Early identification and proper management are key to preventing long-term knee damage and maintaining healthy joint function.
