Understanding the ‘Spondy’ Trio: Spondylosis, Spondylitis, and Spondylolysis

The terms spondylosis, spondylitis, and spondylolysis are often confused with one another due to their similar names, but they represent distinct spinal conditions. Let’s break down each:

Spondylosis :

Spondylosis refers to degenerative wear and tear in the spine, commonly associated with aging. It’s a broad term encompassing various degenerative changes like disc degeneration, facet joint osteoarthritis, and osteophyte (bone spur) formation. Symptoms can include stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility.

Spondylitis :

Spondylitis is inflammation of the spine, often autoimmune in nature. It causes pain, stiffness, and can lead to fusion of vertebrae over time. Unlike spondylosis, spondylitis is more common in younger adults and involves inflammation.

Spondylolysis :

Spondylolysis is a stress fracture or defect in the pars interarticularis – a thin part of the vertebra. Common in athletes or those with repetitive spine stress, it can lead to instability and, if it progresses, spondylolisthesis (vertebra slipping).

In short:

– Spondylosis: Degenerative changes, wear and tear.

– Spondylitis: Inflammatory, often autoimmune.

– Spondylolysis: Stress fracture in the vertebra.
