Chondromalacia patellae, also known as runner’s knee, is a condition where the cartilage on the underside of the patella(kneecap) gets irritated and softens. This can cause knee pain, stiffness and a grinding sensation, especially when bending or straightening the knee.
Causes:
- Overuse or repetitive strain
- Muscle imbalance or weakness
- Trauma or injury
- Misalignment of patella
- Aging
Symptoms:
Feeling of instability or weakness
Knee pain, especially when bending or straightening
Grinding sensation
Swelling and tenderness around the patellae
Treatment:
- Rest and ice to reduce pain and inflammation
- Correcting the biomechanical axis with rope and belt technique
- Strengthening exercises for quadriceps and hamstrings
- Improve patellar tracking with strengthening exercises and Taping
Treatment focuses on reducing pain, strengthening the supporting muscles and improving knee mechanics to prevent irritation and promote healing.
