Meniscus: Myths vs Facts About Regeneration

The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage in the knee. There are two menisci in each knee joint situated on the medial and lateral side between the femur and tibia.
They act as shock absorbers, stabilize the knee, and distribute weight evenly.
There are two types of menisci: medial meniscus (inner side) and lateral meniscus (outer side).
Meniscus injury can happen in various ways:
- Sports injury ..a sudden turn or change in direction common in sports like football or tennis
- Direct impact: a blow on the knee as in a fall or collision
- Lifting heavy objects: twisting or lifting heavy weights can strain the meniscus
- Degenerative wear and tear: age-related wear and tear can lead to meniscus tears
- Overuse: repetitive strain on the knee joint, common in runners and cyclists.
The Meniscus is a crucial cartilage in the knee joint. Let’s debunk the myths around meniscus regeneration:

Myth 1: The meniscus can fully regenerate
Fact: The meniscus has limited regenerative capacity, especially in it’s inner two-thirds (white zone), due to poor blood supply.
Myth 2: All meniscus tear require surgery
Fact: Small, stable tears in the outer third (red zone) might heal with conservative treatment.
Myth 3: Meniscus surgery guarantees full recovery
Fact: Outcomes vary, some may still experience pain or limited mobility post -surgery.
Myth 4: Young people can regenerate meniscus easily
Fact: Age isn’t a guarantee, regeneration depends on tear location, size and overall health.
What can help?
Along with the conservative treatment like physical therapy and pain management, medical yoga can help in maintaining the joint alignment with the help of props (belts and ropes), gently stretch and strengthen the surrounding muscles (quads, hamstrings and gluts) without putting excessive stress on the knee.
SOMETIMES, SURGERY IS NECESSARY FOR SEVERE TEARS. ONE MUST CONSULT AN ORTHOPAEDIC DOCTOR.
